PFRP (Pelagic Fisheries Research Program) PI Meeting [ more info ]
11/18/2009 - 11/20/2009 - Manoa, HI USA - Melinda attended and presented two talks at this annual meeting at the University. She shared information on improved geolocation techniques and graphic interfaces, new developments in electronic monitoring of wildlife, and other timely topics.

We were also pleased to contribute reception refreshments during the meeting, providing sustenance along with the opportunity for informal information sharing.

6th International Symposium on Sturgeon
10/25/2009 - 10/31/2009 - Wuhan, Hubei Province China - Melinda attended this conference, along with Yong Huang, who represents our products to our Asian customers. Melinda was honored to be asked to present a talk on tagging technology for the meeting.

18th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals [ more info ]
10/11/2009 - 10/16/2009 - Québec City, QC, Canada - Melinda, Roger, Todd, Kevin, Ann R., and Isaac attended this big and busy conference. Wildlife Computers also sponsored and facilitated, along with Dr. Russ Andrews, a pre-conference workshop entitled, "Techniques to Reduce and Visualize Sampled Data." Following the initial presentations, the well-attended workshop generated productive discussion, which will be used to plan future improvements to data reduction and visualization software. Proceeds from the registration fees for the workshop were donated to the Society for the student travel fund.

There was excitement at the booth over our new single-point fin-mount satellite tag, as well as the recently-deployed Daily Diary, and the ever-growing wide variety of tag shapes that we offer. Todd also used his time at the booth to give individual demonstrations of our innovative WC-DAP analysis software, which now interfaces with Igor, an off-the-shelf application for customizable data viewing.

Basking Sharks: The Global Perspective - Conservation, Management & Research [ more info ]
8/2/2009 - 8/5/2009 - Port Erin, Isle of Man - This scientific symposium was intended to promote international collaboration to establish the status of basking sharks globally, develop research to assess the extent of individual movement between regions, develop strategies for improving conservation, and refine approaches to management. The meeting included presentations and discussion on the use of satellite tags on basking sharks. The Government of the Isle of Man hosted this event, and while we were not there in person, our tags were! Wildlife Computers was pleased to provide tags for an auction which assisted in the funding requirements for the conference.

Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists [ more info ]
7/22/2009 - 7/27/2009 - Portland, OR, USA - Melinda enjoyed an informative exchange of information with researchers from ASIH, AES, HL, and SSAR at this annual meeting.
60th Tuna Conference [ more info ]
5/18/2009 - 5/21/2009 - Lake Arrowhead, CA USA - Melinda, Roger, Heather, Todd, and Kevin took full advantage of this opportunity to listen and to chat with researchers about their hardware and data analysis needs.

They were also pleased to meet Dan Dutton, from Virginia Institute of Marine Science, this year's recipient of the Wildlife Computers Student Scholarship, who attended and presented the results of his research. Dan utilized Microwave Telemetry PSAT tag technology to study habitat utilization of the blue marlin.

The Wildlife Computers Student Scholarship is an annual award, covering the room, board, and registration fee for a student selected by the Tuna Conference Scientific Committee.

Northeast Regional Stranding Network Conference [ more info ]
3/26/2009 - 3/29/2009 - Salem, MA, USA - Melinda really enjoyed this gathering, co-hosted by the New England Aquarium, National Marine Life Center, and The Whale Center of New England. We also welcomed the opportunity to provide support for the regional conference, which is a great size for smaller group interaction and discussions. It was helpful to hear from some of the smaller stranding and rehabilitation organizations, and to learn about special needs they have.

2/17/2009 - 2/19/2009 - Brisbane, Queensland, Australia - This annual meeting was an energetic one, and we were pleased to again be both a sponsor and exhibitor at the gathering. This year's organizers were very excited because this was the first time the symposium was held in the southern hemisphere.

Heather and Alex enjoyed meeting those of you who attended. We also appreciated the opportunity to chat at our exhibition booth!

9/30/2008 - 10/2/2008 - Annapolis, MD, USA - This meeting, which Melinda attended, was a great opportunity to participate in technical discussions between Argos users, manufacturers, and CLS.
2008 Raptor Research Foundation Annual Conference [ more info ]
9/24/2008 - 9/28/2008 - Missoula, MT, USA - Heather and Doug attended as our first official vendor representation at an avian conference. The information they gathered will be helpful as we move forward with the AC1, our avian tag, which has been successfully deployed on Golden eagles and albatrosses, among other species.
ICES 2008 Annual Science Conference [ more info ]
9/22/2008 - 9/26/2008 - Hallifax, NS, Canada - Rather than attending this conference as a vendor, Todd and Ajay sat in on a special session on new tagging techniques. This provided insights to share with our staff.

ICES is the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea. Members of the ICES community now include all coastal states bordering the North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea, with affiliate members in the Mediterranean Sea and southern hemisphere.

3rd International Biologging Science Symposium [ more info ]
9/1/2008 - 9/5/2008 - Pacific Grove, CA USA - After attending the Biologging Symposiums in Tokyo and St. Andrews, we were excited to participate in this third meeting. As in the past, the information presented provided valuable insights to the biologging community. Melinda, Roger, Todd, and Ajay were pleased to attend and share in the informational exchange.
59th Tuna Conference [ more info ]
5/19/2008 - 5/22/2008 - Lake Arrowhead, CA USA - The conference was again an excellent opportunity for the sharing of new ideas, researchers' needs, and field experiences. This year we presented a Wednesday session on improvements being developed for compression algorithms intended for transmitting archival data through the Argos system. Melinda, Roger, Todd, Kevin, and Heather all made the trip south and welcomed the opportunity for direct interaction with those of you out there in the field.
35th Annual Meeting of the Pacific Seabird Group [ more info ]
2/27/2008 - 3/2/2008 - Blaine, WA USA - Todd, Ajay, and Lloyd made the trip west from St. John's to attend the meeting and chat about what the Seabird Group is working on. Good information was shared by all. It was a privilege to also be a financial supporter of this meeting and to assist in enabling more student participants to attend.

2/24/2008 - 2/28/2008 - Auckland, New Zealand - Melinda and Roger enjoyed the opportunity to attend this very constructive gathering. While there, Roger presented a talk entitled "Crossing the Twilight Zone," which outlined alternate geolocation techniques.

1/21/2008 - 1/27/2008 - Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico - During the sympoisum, Heather and Ann were especially pleased to hear from some Mk10-AF users that the Wildlife Computers Fast-GPS tags were far exceeding longevity expectations. Excellent!

The sympoisum, Loreto-style, provided several new experiences, including meeting with attendees in the open air of Plaza Salvatierra, and after the rains began, down the road in the auditorium. This gave us a unique opportunity to listen to the remaining presentations while simultaneously staffing the table. We also welcomed the opportunity to again assist by providing student travel funds for the event.

17th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals [ more info ]
11/29/2007 - 12/3/2007 - Cape Town, South Africa - Melinda is now back from this informative event, where she attended a pre-conference PATOB workshop, as well as many of the presentations. She enjoyed hearing from researchers directly and in person regarding their needs and concerns. Look for us to attend again in 2009!
2nd International Symposium on Tagging and Tracking of Marine Fish with Electronic Devices [ more info ]
10/8/2007 - 10/11/2007 - San Sebastían, Spain - Melinda, Roger, and Todd traveled to San Sebastían to participate in this symposium where they were able to gain insights and information on current and future tagging needs. Wildlife Computers was also pleased to be one of the sponsors of this event.
SCOR Panel on New Technologies for Observing Marine Life Workshop on Geolocation Methods
10/5/2007 - 10/6/2007 - We were pleased to have two of our design engineers, Roger and Todd, invited to attend this workshop, held in conjunction with the 2nd International Symposium on Tracking and Tagging of Marine Fish with Electronic Devices in Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain. This workshop provided an opportunity for the presentation and sharing of some exciting new developments in geolocation-derived position estimation. As always, we welcomed another opportunity to contribute to the on-going discussion on geolocation methods.
6th International Penguin Conference [ more info ]
9/3/2007 - 9/7/2007 - Hobart, Tasmania, Australia - Melinda and Heather had a great time chatting with users and learning more about what their research entails and what their particular instrumentation needs are. It was especially nice to have the opportunity to visit some of the Hobart CSIRO staff while "in the neighborhood."
Joint Meeting of the Ichthyologists and Herpetologists [ more info ]
7/11/2007 - 7/17/2007 - St. Louis, MO USA - Melinda and Roger found this conference to be another excellent opportunity to talk with the user community, in particular those attending the AES-sponsored satellite-based tagging symposium. This symposium on Saturday, 14 July, was a discussion of "The use of satellite-based techniques in shark research - recent results and future challenges."

During the symposium, the researchers shared their successes, challenges, and future requirements. There was a highly productive Q&A session, during which Melinda and Roger answered questions about what technology Wildlife Computers provides with our current products and what technology we are planning to provide as we move forward. Wildlife Computers was very pleased to be able to attend this event to hear so many researchers sharing their experiences and ideas in person, and to be able to refer to this input as we refine our future development plans.

5/21/2007 - 5/24/2007 - Lake Arrowhead, CA USA - This was a great meeting! Very productive and full of good information. Melinda, Kevin, and Heather enjoyed talking with the researchers gathered at the Conference Center, thought the sushi was excellent, and came back with creative and useful ideas for new features the researchers would like us to incorporate in our tags and software. Collaborative effort at its best!
